Mystery Signal Challenge! Black Hat USA 2008 Be the first to identify the source of the signal in mystery.dat and win a 5-in-1 network admin's cable plus a throwing star lan tap! The file format is that used by GNU Radio for complex signals, a sequence of 32 bit floats, interleaved I and Q. To view the signal in baudline, for example, use "raw" format with 2 channels, quadrature, flip complex, 32 bit float, and little endian options. Another example: you can use "od -f" to dump the values to text. The mystery.dat file is available for download as both a .bz2 (58 MB compressed) and a .zip (81 MB compressed). [edit 11 August 2008: removed .zip to save space] They have identical contents. The uncompressed file (177 MB) is also available on CD. The signal has been downconverted from the original frequency to baseband. Clues such as the original frequency and the sample rate may be given if necessary. To enter: If you have identified the signal during my presentation, walk up and interrupt me. If the signal remains unidentified at the end of the talk, I will accept entries until the end of DEFCON. Entries will only be accepted in person. The contest ends once the signal has been correctly identified. download the signal and these instructions: http://www.ossmann.com/bh-usa-08/ prize description: http://www.ossmann.com/5-in-1.html
